TAKOMA PARK, MD – Area coffee lovers rejoiced this week after the launch of Coffee Card, a membership program that not only offers discounts at local independent coffee shops, but also dramatically increases the number of opportunities to casually work the phrase “single-origin Ethiopian” into everyday conversation.
For just $30 a year, members receive discounts at participating cafés throughout Takoma Park, Silver Spring, and Washington, D.C., making it easier than ever to save money while explaining why coffee should really be enjoyed at precisely 148 degrees.
“I’ve already visited four shops this week,” said local resident Maya Feldman while sniffing her espresso with the seriousness of a sommelier. “Yesterday I got to tell three complete strangers that this roast had notes of blackberry, cacao, and sustainable zoning practices.”
Coffee Card founder Dave Piacente says the goal is simple: help people discover locally owned cafés while supporting neighborhood businesses.
Residents say the membership has already transformed their social lives.
“Before Coffee Card, I only had one favorite coffee shop,” said another member. “Now I have thirteen favorite coffee shops, each of which I insist is completely different despite ordering the exact same pour-over, lavender honey oat milk latte.”
Participating café owners report that members are noticeably friendlier, more adventurous, and significantly more likely to spend twenty minutes debating whether a cortado is more “authentico” than a cappuccino.
The program has also been credited with reducing the awkwardness of trying a new coffee shop, replacing it with the far more comfortable awkwardness of pretending you can actually detect subtle floral notes.
At press time, Coffee Card members were reportedly planning a weekend “coffee crawl” that would save them approximately $8 while spending $42 on pastries they hadn’t intended to order.
