TAKOMA PARK, MD – Local residents are expressing alarm over a proposal to extend city council terms from two years to four, warning that the change could significantly delay their next chance to be mad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can\u2019t even imagine waiting four whole years before I can send out my annual candidate questionnaire,\u201d said Eleanor Weiss, president of the Takoma Park Civic Opinion League, a group devoted to grilling councilmembers about everything from hypothetical PAC money in city elections to forced pledges of allegiance to Ward 1. \u201cThat\u2019s practically a generation in civic outrage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other community groups shared similar concerns. The Accumulation of Bold Yard Signs Society (ABYSS), which relies on brisk autumn turnover of campaign signage, fears a four-year term will severely hurt its seasonal business. \u201cWe\u2019re not just selling corrugated plastic signs,\u201d said member Benjamin Kleine. \u201cWe\u2019re helping neighbors antagonize other neighbors, so we can sell even more corrugated plastic signs.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, a new grassroots campaign has sprung up warning against Takoma Park turning into Rockvilles: dozens of homemade signs have appeared throughout the city proclaiming, \u201cTakoma Park is better than Rockville,” a thinly veiled jab at Rockville\u2019s own four-year council terms. \u201cWe refuse to become Rockville,\u201d said ananonymous sign poster. \u201cFour-year terms are just the first step toward Rockvillification!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents of the Takoma Park Facebook Group are also in uproar after the platform quietly changed its entire algorithm, designed to stir up neighborhood arguments, without warning. \u201cI\u2019ve spent years cultivating a perfect digital rage ecosystem,\u201d said the group moderator. \u201cNow the posts about clapping at council meetings aren\u2019t even showing up in order of maximum fury!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

City officials defended the proposal, noting that longer council terms could save $140,000 every two years and give elected leaders more time to focus on pressing issues like sidewalk maintenance, stop sign camera equity, and whether a bike rack can coexist with a tree root. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
